There's an Alien in my Belly!

Check this out:

It's not the clearest video but if you look closely you can see that every time I shake my belly there's a weird wave-like motion after which is the baby's arm moving around. Crazy eh!? She's usually a lot more active than this but it's so hard to get that on video because as soon as I move to grab the camera, she stops moving. So you'll just have to take my word for it that most of the time, my belly looks like a water bed! No joke, it's so weird! I'll keep trying to get it on video though. So far only Antonis has seen it happen once or twice but other than that it's like she waits until no one could possibly be looking, sneaky little thing! I'm sure she thinks she's funny when she does it too.

So I haven't been online much the last few days because I had yet another lovely little spat with my computer. Actually it wasn't really my computer, it was the cord. It kind of blew up....

Friday morning I woke up and tried to start my usual morning routine...you know the one: email, facebook, read 10,000 food blogs...but nothing was happening. Black screen, nooooooo!!!! No big deal. There's been a loose wire in the power cord for a long time now and I know I have to place it just right so that I can actually draw electricity from the plug-in to the computer. But Friday morning as I was trying to arrange the cord and find the 'sweet spot' for the millionth time when suddenly it was like a Canada Day firework display in my hand!! Don't worry, I didn't get electrocuted. But the cord did. Well, one of the cords inside the cord did. Melted it right in half. Poor thing. So I sent Antonis to get a new cord and we're now back in action. Notice how calm I am? I must be a changed woman after all these computer issues and camera issues etc.....no? You don't believe me? Yeah, you probably shouldn't. I actually kind of went a bit psycho after the wire shorted out and nearly burnt the house down. It was 8:30am, waaaaaaay before Antonis usually wakes up but I ripped the sheet off of him and violently shook him awake while screeching about what happened like a rabid banshee. He didn't like that very much. He told me to calm down and that he'd deal with it when he woke up. I didn't like that very much. I wanted my computer NOW!!! But no one ever does nice things for rabid banshees so he went back to sleep and I pouted on the couch watching Keeping up with the Kardashians until he woke up again at 11:30am. Anyway all is well now, my computer is fine again, Antonis has forgiven me, I'm calm again and thanks to the sparks shooting out of that shitty old cord I was reminded that Canada Day was just around the corner. I may have forgotten it this year had it not been for that! So,

HAPPY CANADA EVERYBODY!!!

So I know you're probably waiting to hear what the baby's middle name is since I told you the other day that we'd picked one but I was waiting to talk to my mom first before I announced it. Well....I haven't talked to my mom yet. Sorry! You'll have to wait a little longer. Soon though, I promise!

In other things baby related, my last post was about nesting and I've now been informed that my cleaning spree IS in fact nesting and that that means I'll be going into labour soon........WHAT???!!!! This is an old wives tale right?? I'm only 32 weeks, I seriously doubt that scrubbing the knobs on the cupboards is a solid indication that my water is about to break. But maybe it is because all of yesterday was not a good day for me. I had some serious lower back and lower stomach pain. Kind of like really bad period cramps that radiated down into my hips and legs. I hardly did anything at all yesterday....actually that's not true. I still cleaned the fridge, walked to the grocery store and back, made lentil burgers and homemade salsa. But in between all that and after the only thing I could do was lay on the couch (lay on the couch try to get a good video of the alien in my belly). I really didn't feel great at all and I actually got Antonis to call the doctor which I NEVER do unless I think it's really important. Unfortunately we weren't able to get through to him (slightly concerning but anyway....) so I decided to stop calling him and that we'd just leave it unless the pain got worse or if it lasted until today. Well the pain got better and I feel fine today so I guess it was just one of many uncomfortable pregnancy symptoms that come and go. But I'm taking all of this as a sign that it's time to pack my hospital bag. I'm not actually concerned that I'm going to go into premature labour, but just for peace of mind I've decided that this week I'll pack mine and Eleni's things for the big day so it's done and out of the way. And IF it does happen that she arrives a little earlier than expected, I'll be prepared and not running around the house freaking out like the rabid banshee I tend to morph into these days....

As for things I got up to lately...since I'm such a social butterfly these days and I know that's why you read the blog because I have such an intense schedule of events and people to see and places to go (I wrote that with a very posh sounding voice in my head just to further emphasize the sarcasm so feel free to insert your own posh voice so you get the full effect). Actually I did have a few things I got up to this week. Nothing big but Antonis and I took a trip down to Mytilini to look at some cars. Hopefully, FINALLY, we'll be buying a car in the next couple of weeks. I've told him that for July we have 4 things that have to, without question, be done:
  1. finish the baby's room
  2. pack my hospital bag
  3. collect all the stuff that friends will lend to us for her so we know what we have and what we still need to buy
  4. buy a car.

If we do this by the end of the month than August we're just waiting for the baby to arrive. So he's working on the car thing now which is great! I'm working on packing the bag which is also great! Antonis is making plans about getting Eleni's room ready and once we get enough junk out of there to make some room we can tell our friends to back their trucks up to the door and unload the baby stuff! I think we're making good progress...even though this is all just talk at the moment and nothing has actually happened yet but anyway, we gotta start somewhere.

Yes I digressed again, as usual. Getting back on topic and to my insanely busy social calendar....I also went for coffee with my friend Kasia this week. Her and her hubby are also expecting a baby girl, a month after us. I didn't take a picture of her because she kept saying she was really tired and I know how pissed off I get when people are snapping pictures of me while I'm tired or feeling crappy so I left her alone. But she was at my baby shower so you've seen her before anyway. Here's a couple of pictures from our "romantic date" at Tzalikis

Sunset on an open-air patio...hence the "romantic date" feel

I was trying to get the fishing boat because it was covered in sea gulls but it's too far away so we'll call this another sunset shot....

Me, big round belly at 8 months preggo and the best fresh juice ever. Banana, apple, nectarine, orange and pear courtesy of our favourite waiter/story-teller/previous drinking-partner and soon to be again,  Kostas!

Kasia and I talked all things baby, pregnancy, hormonal, stupid husbands, and "I'm dying of the heat" related. It was a lovely evening. My original plan was to go to the open-air movie theater and watch Snow White and the Huntsmen but Kasia and I have been trying to get our lazy pregnant butts together forever so when she called and suggested we go for a drink I was happy to change plans. But sometime this week I plan on sitting  in a field with a lemonade and a bag of popcorn while watching Kristin Stewart kick some ass as Snow White. I'll bring my camera along since it will be proof that I do leave the house sometimes.

That's all for today guys. Have a great Sunday. To all my Canadians, ENJOY since tomorrow's still a day off so you should probably have another beer.

HAPPY CANADA DAY!!

  1. Dear Tara, the Alien looks amazing ;-)
I just wanted to ask still about the cleaning and nesting or what ever it was - anyway the thing with baking soda and aluminium folio... So HOW do you do it? I tried it on some silver spoons which are kind of black... But maybe i did something wrong... I placed an aluminium folio in a bowl, placed the spoons on top and sprinkled some baking soda and then water on top... They have become maybe a little shinier, but not really. So what's the trick?????
Tzalikis looks fancy - i remember the cakes..... take care, love M xxxx

    1. Hi Marjaana,
So there should be enough water in the bowl so the spoons can soak for a while and enough baking soda in the water so the water isn't a paste but cloudy and gritty....does that make sense? And then let them soak for a while depending on how black they are, maybe try 30 minutes. Then when you are ready to take the spoons out from soaking, rub the aluminum foil on the spoons kind of like you would if you were washing them with a cloth. After that they should be nice and sparkly! You'll want to wash them in soap and water after though just to make sure there isn't any left over baking soda stuck on there.

      Hope that helps!
      Filakia!! xoxoxo
